New services, new hospitals, for
a new healthier future.

Fit for the Future is an ambitious project to improve the health of people across North Staffordshire over the next four years.

Patients, the public and partner organisations NHS North Staffordshire, NHS Stoke-on-Trent and the University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust, are working together to design new services and facilities around what patients need.

This means providing better health services in local communities as well as improved specialist hospital services and treatment.

By 2012 improvements to local health services will include:

  • More outpatient services available at community hospitals and health centres like Shelton, Bentilee and Leek

  • More services in the community to help people lead healthier lives and recover more quickly after treatment

  • Support to help staff work in different ways to deliver better care for patients

  • Brand new hospitals at the City General and the Haywood Hospital.

Why do things need to change?

People living in North Staffordshire tend to have poorer health than people in other areas of England and locally the NHS wants to change this and help people live longer, healthier lives.

Fit for the Future is a unique opportunity to:

  • provide more services in local communities

  • replace old out-of-date facilities with new state-of-the art facilities and equipment

  • improve access to care for everyone

What will change?

Health promotion - more support to help people to stay healthy, stop smoking and lead more active lifestyles.

New, modern facilities - larger health centres at Biddulph, Shelton, Bentilee, Milehouse, Cobridge and Meir where, GP treatment, social care and community services can be provided.

Community Diagnostics (tests) - improved use of skills and services at community hospitals like Bradwell, Longton, Leek, Cheadle and the Haywood so that most people can have tests done without needing to travel to the major hospital UHNS.

Walk-in Centre - the redeveloped Haywood Hospital will provide an improved Walk-in Centre to treat minor injuries and illnesses.

Long Term Healthcare - more active involvement with people who have long-term conditions to help them stay independent by using modern techniques like telemedicine.

Outpatients - 118,000 appointments and specialist consultations will be carried out in community facilities.

Intermediate Care - more beds in the local community so people can recover or receive treatment in a more appropriate place for their individual needs.

Brand new hospital - a new, state-of-the-art University Hospital of North Staffordshire, boasting the most up-to-date medical and diagnostic services.
